Trinity Lutheran Church
For 90 years, Trinity Lutheran Church in Lake Nebagamon has been proclaiming God’s love in Jesus Christ in our community. In 1931 the church was founded and met originally in the Presbyterian church. A building of their own soon followed on highway B extremely near where St Anthony’s now stands. In the late 1980’s a parcel of land was purchased on 1st street. 1990 saw the church construct a new building with the labor of members and people from the community. Expansions happened in 2000 and 2008. Again, the projects were done by members of the church and the community.

Trinity Lutheran is a vibrant part of Lake Nebagamon with worship, and service to our community and world. The congregation is a welcoming, active, and thriving community of faith in Lake Nebagamon and beyond.

As shown in photo, six years of hard work by the pastor and members of Trinity Church ended in 1939 when the first services were held in the church on County Trunk Highway B near Fitch Avenue.

NEBAGAMON HISTORY SPOTLIGHT:
St. Anthony Catholic Church in Lake Nebagamon, Wi. In September of 2020 Maria Lockwood did an article to announce the building project, to break ground on a new church, attached to the new parish hall.

The building they will be replacing dates back to 1900, with a basement addition in 1953. A capital campaign was launched in December for this $600,000 project and by April they had the support needed to complete it. The parish family really came behind the project quickly and decisively and how exciting to be able to offer a space for people to gather as a church and serve the larger and ever-growing community.

An article in the “Nebagamon Enterprise” the early local newspaper, tells us that the Catholic community did not wait for a building in order to have services. Mass was first held on October 18, 1899 at the home of a Mr. Robinson. It was then held in the school while plans were made for a building on land donated by W.B. Carlin of the Weyerhaeuser Lumber Co. The site is on Broadway (Highway B) overlooking the lake.

    • First mass in the new church was celebrated, Father Boyce was pastor at this time.
    • Two baptisms took place this first year, performed by Father N. Kieffer. John Anderson Fisher (Son of James and Mathilda Anderson) and Grace Rosel Derausaer (Daughter of Joseph Derausaer and Maria DeMar)
    • 1903 The church was enclosed with a fence and a 600-pound bell was installed. The new bell is a good thing as it calls on Catholic friends reminding them of their Sunday duties.
    • 1904 A fine new alter was purchased for nearly $200. Early parishioners remember the main high altar as being of light varnished wood with a thin line of gold trim.
    • The statue of St. Anthony, the patron saint, has been in the church for as long as anyone can remember.
    • 1910 Sawmills ceased operation. The community suffered a great decline.
    • 1918 Only two families remained in the parish and for years following, only a few masses were performed each year.
    • 1940 Mass returned to being said every Sunday. The church was heated by two black pot-belly stoves at the front of the sanctuary.
    • 1953 A full basement was put in under the church and oil heating was installed. Catechism classes were organized that year and were taught by Grace Larson, Irene Bridge and Mary Hall.
    • 1969 St. Anne Church in Blueberry merged with St. Anthony bringing in people from Brule, Poplar, Lakeside, Cloverland, Wentworth, Maple and Highland. As well as summer residents throughout the area.
    • 1971 The first parish council was formed (Edward Marcuk, the first council president). Consisting of six adults, a student representative, and the president of the altar society (a non-voting member).
    • 1975 First confirmation class was conferred, by Monsignor Alphonse Kress, who represented Bishop George Hammes.
    • 1976 Diamond Jubilee celebration to observe the 75th anniversary of the church. All former pastors, parishioners, and the community were invited to join with HIS Excellency, the Most Reverend George A. Hammes, Bishop of the Diocese of Superior, in an Anniversary Mass.
    • 1980-1993 The status of St. Anthony Church became uncertain with the death of Fr. Thomas Reibold. Leaving the congregation in mourning with growing concern for the viable future.
    • 1994-1996 Fr. Vincent Bromley was appointed Pastor. St. Anthony was now part of a cluster of four parishes comprised of Lake Nebagamon, Solon Springs, Gordon and Minong.
    • 1996 Lake Nebagamon parish clustered with St. Anthony in Superior, and Fr. Dean Buttrick was assigned our pastor.
      • Gratefully there is a need to acknowledge many priests that have helped served our church throughout the years: Hermann, Bruillard, Gerkovids, Jazdzewski, Pilon, Charron, Habrake, Savageau, Fagan, Kinney, Nowack, Prock, Shaney, Fries, Weber, Owens, Annabring, Husnick, Theorosius, Krembs, Zukaitis, Kress, Rivard, Klister, Shermon, Behen, Swadzich, Schlaemez, Ludwig, McDermott, Tracy, Kelchak, Meyett, Torkildson, Wiedner, Rush, Usas, Regh, Helsin, Schoone, Brost, Speerstra, Carey, Paul, Stremski, Oberts, McGrath, Inna, Willger, Flaherty and Lusson
    • St. Anthony has had the wonderful energy blessed upon us from Fr. Andrew Ricci, from Vicar to bringing our church to where it is today. His strong leadership has helped guide many new assignments and training including Fr. Laski and Fr. Neuschwander and he is still with us every Sunday to provide mass. Fr. Ricci has led us to this new adventure building our new parish building, blessing the groundbreaking and is always helping to provide to his parishioners.
    • The new church is set to have its dedication ceremony on June 20, 2021. This is such a great history from 1900 to today. May we all show our love and support for this wonderful opportunity for growth for young and old for many years to come. And we can all be excited to hear that original church bell ring again.

NEBAGMON HISTORY SPOTLIGHT:
A library in Lake Nebagamon was a longtime dream of the late Kay Coletta. And as with most of Kay’s dreams, she worked hard to achieve it. A group of Nebagamonites met many evenings to plan for the library and to get funding. Through grants and donations, the library came to be. Kay and her committee decided to name it after Imogene McGrath a longtime educator and a dear friend of them. Imogene died before the library opened in July of 2008, but Kay asked her permission to name it after her before she died. The year of Covid showed how much the library means to us all. It was one of the things most missed during the shutdown. We have been open only Wednesdays from 9:30 to 2:30 for several months but this gave patrons the opportunity to pick up books they ordered from the library system and helped ease the isolation. We are fortunate to have a SER trainee at the library, Jerry Wickland who will resume training April 8 allowing the library to be back to normal hours. Imogene’s family are all involved in the library as are some of her dearest friends. Three generations of the Anderson family are actively involved in many aspects of the IMML, as well as three generations of the McGrath family. It is truly heartwarming to have so many people eager to help out. The library exists only through the generosity of others. We receive no funding of any kind. Expenses are paid through donations and fundraising. Donations can be mailed to IMML. PO Box 502 Lake Nebagamon Wi 54849

February FUN FACTS:
The February Birthstone is ~~Amethyst
The official birthstone for the month of February is the stunning purple amethyst and hence the February birthstone color is purple.
February is one of the few months that only have one birthstone, so there is no alternative February gemstone.
Amethyst is one of the Zodiac birthstones for both for both Aquarius (Jan 21 – Feb 19) and Pisces (Feb 20 – Mar 20) star signs.
Other birthday symbols include the birth flowers for February which are the Violet, Iris and Primrose.
Besides being a meaningful February birthday gift, Amethyst jewelry is the also given to celebrate a sixth wedding anniversary.
The name amethyst is derived from Greek legend and words that mean ‘to prevent intoxication’.
Amethysts are said to symbolize courage and inner strength.

The ice-skating rink, located in Lake Nebagamon has been flooded and is ready to use when temps are at a safe range. Due to COVID-19 policy the warming shack remains closed. We sure hope all can enjoy some time on the rink and keep safe while enjoying the outdoors. Interesting fact: flooding the rink this year took 30,000 gallons of water. This is equivalent to the amount of water used to fight a fully engulfed house fire. 10 fire trucks at a rate of 1-2 hours per truck load. This is a great training opportunity for the volunteers, from driving the truck, running the pump, practice hose techniques and operate our water points.

Hoping to get back to meeting during this new year. We are always looking for volunteers or those willing to come to meeting to keep our events alive.

January 2021

NEWS FROM OUR VILLAGE PRESIDENT:
2020 was an interesting year in many respects. As we navigated through the year as a village, I have been so pleased and impressed with the staff and village board. The commitment demonstrated by Amy Huber, Daisha Nolen, Nick Hofstader, and your board members ensured that we were able to meet the challenges of 2020 and are in a good position to be ready for 2021 and beyond. Their flexibility and ability to be proactive to face issues that invariably arise has made this a better community in which to live. We have striven to do our best to make village government work to the benefit of all of our residents and businesses. I believe that we are continually working to do even more for the place we call home. I encourage your comments, ideas, and help as we go boldly together into the future. MARCH FUN FACTS:
Welcome to the third month of the year—or, if you were born before 150 B.C., the first! According to the oldest Roman calendars, one year was ten months long, beginning in March and ending in December. It may sound crazy, but you can still see traces of this old system in our modern calendar: because December was the tenth month, it was named for the number ten in Latin (decem), just like September was named for seven (septem). So, what about January and February? They were just two nameless months called “winter,” proving that winter is literally so awful it doesn’t even deserve a spot on the calendar.

The birthstone for March is the aquamarine. The zodiac signs for March are Aries (March 21 – April 19) and Pisces (February 19 – March 20) The birth flower for March is daffodil.

How St. Patrick’s Day Originated
St. Patrick’s Day began as a religious holiday to honor St. Patrick, who brought Christianity to Ireland in the fifth century.  The first parade for the holiday occurred in New York City on March 17, 1762. It featured Irish soldiers who served in the English military. In 1948, President Harry S. Truman attended the parade.  In 1991, Congress proclaimed March to be Irish-American Heritage Month to honor the achievements and contributions of Irish immigrants and their descendants who are living in the United States today.

FEBRUARY FUN FACTS:
February is mostly recognized for Valentine’s Day, flowers, and depending on where you are, being incredibly cold!  Oddly enough, even though it’s just another month, there’s a lot of history behind this month of romance and love!

    •  February fluctuates between having 28 and 29 days per year. The 29th day only occurs every 4 years during leap years.
    • The length of February was finalized when Julius Caesar remade the Roman calendar and assigned the month 28 days and 29 days. In 713 B.C., February was officially added to the Roman calendar.
    • If you were born in February, your birthstone is an amethyst and your flower is a primrose.
    • The western zodiac signs in February are Aquarius which is until February 19th, and Pisces, which is until February 20th.
    • Over time, the length of February kept changing. At one point, it had as little as 23 days.
    • In the Northern Hemisphere, February is the third month of winter. Meanwhile in the Southern Hemisphere, February is the last month of summer. Between the North and South Hemispheres, February is the equivalent of August.
    • The name of February comes from the Latin word “februum” which means purification.
    • February was named after a purification ritual which was like an early Roman spring cleaning festival.
    • In Welsh, February is sometimes known as “y mis bach” which means “little month.”
    • February and January were the last months added to the Roman numeral calendar.

MESSAGE FROM VILLAGE PRESIDENT: I have had the privilege of serving the people of Lake Nebagamon in the role of Village President for almost a year now. One of the goals I have had is to increase openness and transparency in the way village government works and the priorities, actions, and intent of your elected leadership. To that end, we have made available past village board actions as soon as they are approved by the board and placed them on the website so they may be viewed at your convenience. I would encourage each of you to go to the website at https://villagelakenebagamon.com/ and view the resources there. They are not limited to simply minutes. There are other documents and links to keep you informed about what the board has done and continues to do to make Lake Nebagamon a great place to call home.

I am pleased to announce the grant applications to do much needed work at the boat landing including storm water runoff in that area have been completed and submitted. This was a tremendous undertaking and we look forward to hearing a positive result to continue to protect the invaluable resource we have in the lake. My grateful thanks to all who have pulled together to get us to this point.

We have also made great strides in reviewing the ordinances of the village. In order to have effective government that complies with state law and is enforceable these ordinances as well as our zoning has been reviewed so that they simply work better for all of us.

There are many other improvements we are endeavoring to make here in Lake Nebagamon. It takes all of us together to do this work and I would encourage each of us to work together to make our community the best place to live in Northwestern Wisconsin.

Thank you, Darrell Kyle, Village President

JANUARY FUN FACTS:
The name given to the month of ‘January’ is derived from the ancient Roman name ‘Janus’ who presided over the gate to the new year. He was revered as the ‘God of Gateways’, ‘Doorways’ and of the ‘Journey.’ Janus protected the “Gate of Heaven’, known as the ‘Lord of Beginnings’, is associated with the ‘Goddess Juno-Janus’, and often symbolism can easily be associated with the month known by many as a start of a new year which brings new opportunities. We cast out the old and welcome in the new. It is the time when many reflect on events of the previous year and often resolve to redress or improve some aspect of daily life or personal philosophy.

JANUARY BIRTHSTONE:
Those born in January are lucky to have the beautiful and diverse garnet as their birthstone. Garnets are commonly red but also come in an extraordinary range of beautiful colors, including orange, yellow, purple and vibrant green. There are even garnets that change color from blue to purple in different lighting. Some believe the true value of the garnet birthstone is its power to bring the wearer good health, wealth and happiness.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT:
New year, new decade, new ownership at Vee’s Marketing

Jason Vee, who started in sales at Vee’s Marketing in 2006 and became president of the company in July 2018, is now sole owner of the operation. Jason announced to us this week that he is “100 percent owner and CEO of Vee’s Marketing,” a brokerage founded by Jason’s father, Scott, 30 years ago. Jason said, “Scott and I came to an agreement a few weeks ago, and he sold all of the shares to me on Jan. 1.” Acknowledging his dad’s hard work and determination to make company, now located in Superior, WI, a success, Jason said, “Scott started Vee’s Marketing in the basement of our home in Lake Nebagamon, WI, in 1990. He ran it successfully for 29 years and sold it for a profit when he was finished. All three of those things are great lifetime achievements.” Now in its 30th year, Vee’s Marketing Inc. is a year-round provider of onions for U.S. and Canadian retail and food service customers, sourcing from growing areas across North America and shipping yellows, reds, whites and sweets. Jason told us back in 2017 the company’s long-term goal is to keep pace with the changing industry and adapt to its demands. When he came on as a salesman in 2006, Jason had served in the Marine Corps for four years before spending four more years at UW-Madison, where he earned a degree in economics. Seven years after he became part of Vee’s Marketing team, his sister, Angie Sapik, also joined the family company. For a number of years the team was made up of Scott, Jason, Angie, And John Alstrup and longtime salesman Robert Anderson, who retired in 2016. While Vee’s initially brokered apples, onions, fruits and vegetables, it began specializing in onions and potatoes. Jason explained in 2017 that it was “after building relationships with onion shippers and onion customers that Scott started to narrow his focus on onions. At that time, moving only onions put Vee’s Marketing on the same playing field as much larger companies in that commodity. It was smart and very effective.” Of course, the industry changed significantly in the three decades Scott was at the helm of Vee’s – not only in technology but also in philosophy and pace. Jason said when he started in sales, he and his dad each had two phones on their desks.

“There was hustle. It was fast and fun,” he said. These days most business is done by email and text, and Jason said he receives well over 100 emails a day. Back in 2017, before the move to Superior, Jason spoke of expansion and noted, “I’m absolutely looking to open new offices. We are a Midwest company. Strategically, it would make sense to take on people that can help us expand further into South Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas. We do a fair amount of Canadian business as well, [so] a Canadian office isn’t out of the realm of possibility… I’m not actively recruiting, but my door is open to anyone already in onions or potatoes that strategically makes sense.”

Our congratulations to Jason, whose new role fits like a glove, and to Scott, who we hope is happily pursuing new adventures with the same enthusiasm he used at Vee’s Marketing for 30 years.

NOVEMBER FUN FACTS:

November, the 11th month of the year, has 30 days and marks the beginning of the winter holiday season for most folks, even if the winter solstice doesn’t occur until late December.

We’ve made this month, named for the ninth (novem) month in the early Roman calendar, into a social time of community suppers, feasts of thanksgiving, and general elections.

The November birth flowers, chrysanthemums, are often nicknamed “mums.” The word, “chrysanthemum,” comes from the Greek prefix “chrys-” meaning golden and “- anthemion,” meaning flower. It’s original colors were golden, though mums now come in many colors.

CHRYSANTHEMUM SYMBOLISM
A native to Asia with a history that dates back to 15th century B.C., chrysanthemum symbolism often originates from its original birthplace. In Japan, there’s even a “Festival of Happiness” to celebrate this flower each year.

• Both the Chinese and Japanese consider chrysanthemums a powerful emblem of youth. The Chinese also believe that it prevents gray hair.
• A symbol of the sun, the Japanese consider the orderly unfolding of the chrysanthemum’s petals to represent perfection.
• Confucius once suggested chrysanthemums be used as an object of meditation.
• It’s said that a single petal placed in the bottom of a glass of wine enhances longevity.

CHRYSANTHEMUM MEANING
• A red chrysanthemum means “I love you.”
• A white chrysanthemum means innocence, purity, and pure love.
• A yellow chrysanthemum means slighted love.
Chrysanthemums are perennials. After they finish blooming in the fall, mulch them with several inches of straw to protect them from the cold.

Upcoming NCA Events:
Nov
12th NCA Mtg (Gopher Hole)
Dec
1 Annual Tree Lighting
Light up the Lake Contest
Jan
18 Spaghetti Fundraiser

We are always looking for volunteers or those willing to come to meeting to keep our events alive.

November Birthstone – Topaz – Scorpio
Topaz, the November birthstone along with Citrine, has all the colors of the setting sun – Brown, yellow, orange, sherry, red and pink. It is said to cure insomnia, asthma, and hemorrhages. Topaz
crystals may become quite large and finished gems weighing several thousands of carats are seen in many museum collections.

November Birthstone Twins – The Healing Citrine and The Fiery Topaz! November born individuals, are blessed with two ruling Birthstones, the revered Topaz and the gentle, healing Citrine.

Topaz is a gemstone exhibiting an array of spectacular colors. The stone was believed to be symbolic of the Egyptian Sun God Ra, with its brilliant golden glow and fiery intensity. Owing to this quality of the Topaz, it was fashioned into several amulets and talismans.

The citrine is diametrically opposite to its November cousin in quality and disposition. While the topaz is associated with passion, intensity and determination, the Citrine has taken on the more gentle qualities of men; peace, prosperity, loyalty, healing and creativity. The stone is also known as the ‘Healing Quartz’ in many sects.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT***:

About Boinkle BOINKLE CANDLE COMPANY·FRIDAY, MARCH 8, 2019·

My name is Liane, and I am a true artisan! I absolutely love making things by hand. Crocheting, making paper crafts, making signs, woodworking, soap making, photography, and sewing…and now, candles. I have always enjoyed candles. I usually have a candle of some sort burning every single night. Recently we had a tragedy in our family. We lost my mother-in-law, Missy, very unexpectedly. When we were going through her things, I came upon some cute little jars that had a note on them that read “to make candles in”. The jars had frosted pine trees etched into the sides. I thought “I’m going to use these the way Missy intended”. So that is how my candle making career began. Missy and I were very close, and we both enjoyed shopping for locally made items…including candles. We liked finding products that were unique and used natural ingredients. I’ve chosen to use soy wax and pure cotton wicks. Beeswax will be coming soon! After the events of the last year, my husband and I decided to move to Lake Nebagamon, WI. The basement of our house has a mother-in-law apartment, an ironic but project fulfilling development of our new home. There is a small but full kitchen for me to master this craft. I have spent many, many hours getting the wax, scent and wicks just perfect. I strive to be as unique and fun as possible with the scents and their names. My inspiration comes from all the awesomeness that surrounds Lake Superior and the uniqueness of the woods that surround our new home. There are so many things to like and the ideas for my candles are just endless. I did struggle with a company name. My husband, Nick, had been at a leadership training conference (which was unlike any other/changed him dramatically). That same weekend I was praying about a name for the company. He came home with this weird word, “Boinkle”. It means “to live in the moment” and “the essence of positivity, love, trust and self-confidence”. After I heard that I had my name. Thank you so much for taking the time to read about Boinkle and Happy aroma enjoyment!
