Nebagamon community newsletter

MARCH, 2018

MISSION STATEMENT: To welcome businesses, community groups, and citizens of Lake Nebagamon, WI to participate in the promotion of the community. Our objective is to work together to inform Lake Nebagamon, WI area of local news.

MEETINGS: We meet the second Tuesday of each month, at 6:00 p.m. The location is at the Lake Nebagamon, WI Auditorium, downstairs on the lower level. Please use side entrance. Everyone is welcome!

CONTACT INFORMATION: Debra Anderson, Editor 218-830-2317. (Please leave a message, if no answer.) E-Mail: debllnews@outlook.com.

At this time, I would like to introduce myself. Since I have such a common name, and there are many Debra (Debbie) Anderson(s) in the area, it has been suggested that I explain which one I am. I am new to the area (approximately 2 years ago) and moved from Barnes, WI. My Dad had a cabin in Barnes, WI, so we used to spend a lot of time in this wonderful community, especially at the Dairy Queen! I am originally from Grand Marais, MN.

I am retired and work part-time at the McGrath Memorial Library in Lake Nebagamon. Feel free to stop in and introduce yourself. It would be a pleasure meeting people of the area and the community.

At the same time, you can check out some books from the Superior Library Section of the Library, if you wish. And, we also have a “Lending Library” whereby you don’t need a Library card to check out the books. It is based on the honor system. Hope to see you soon!

NEWS SUBMISSIONS: Deadline is the 20th of each month. Publication is on the 23rd of each month, or soon thereafter. News items can include community events, business events, school activities, church activities, etc. We will publish articles on people of interest, local history, etc. Please contact the Editor, Debra Anderson. (Contact information provided above.)

This Newsletter is a “Work in Progress” and will eventually have the format a Newsletter should have. In the meantime, we are working on formatting, the logo, and layout. Thank you for your patience.

If you would like to have the newsletter e-mailed to you, please contact Debra Anderson at debllnews@outlook.com. She will add you to the e-mail list for distribution of the newsletter. We will not be mailing the newsletter via the U.S. Postal Service.

VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED:

The Nebagamon Community Association is in need of Adult Volunteers for Friday evenings for rollerskating at the Lake Nebagamon Auditorium. The Volunteers would supervise the skaters, sell snacks, assist with the rollerskates, cleaning, and closing the Auditorium. If interested, please call Swan at the Administration Office for Lake Nebagamon at 715-374-3101. If we get more people involved, we can offer the rollerskating again to the children of the community.

MARCH, 2018 EVENTS:

1. There is Senior Bingo (for ages 50+) held at the Lake Nebagamon Auditorium every Friday beginning at 12 noon. The games (and lots of fun) start at 12:30, so get there early and get your cards. The Bingo is held in the lower level of the building.

2. MARCH 4TH! Bridge’s 4th Annual Polar Plunge. This fundraiser is to raise funds for the Volunteer Fire Department of Lake Nebagamon.

The entry fee for each “Plunger” is $20.00. You can also get Sponsors for your Plunge and we will be able to donate more money to the Fire Department. There are prizes for the most money raised and for the best Plunge-wear! Each participant will receive a T-shirt commemorating their courage and willingness to jump into ice cold water! There will be a bon fire and hot dog feast at Bridge’s Bar after the event.

Pre-Register at Bridge’s Bar before March 4th. You can get a pledge sheet at the same time. Otherwise, you can register on the day of the event from 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon.

You don’t need to take the Plunge to enjoy the festivities! Come and cheer on the participants, watch the fun, enjoy the bon fire, and have a light lunch. This all benefits our Volunteer Fire Department! Without them coming to our rescue in our time of need, situations could be much more tragic and dire. They are our heroes!

3. IN YOUR EASTER BONNET! Lake Life Products, on Lake Avenue in Lake Nebagamon, will hold their Annual Easter Egg Hunt at the Shop. The Easter Bunny will be there also! So, hop on down to the shop, on Saturday, March 31st, 2018, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., to have some “hare raising fun”! You will have an “eggsellent” time. See you there!

TRIVIA INFORMATION ON EASTER:

Why a Bunny? German Immigrants, in the 1700’s, brought with them the tradition of Osterhaws, the Bunny who laid eggs. Children would build nexts for Osterhaws to lay colored eggs.
Why an Egg? To Christians, the Easter egg represents the empty tomb and the resurrection of Jesus.

DID YOU KNOW? Written and Submitted by Barb Resheske

Douglas County has been asking residents to have water tests done on their wells to set a data base for the future. Why you ask?

That future being whether or not Confined Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO’s) will be coming to our County. They have been forced out of other states because the ground water contamination has been so foul. Wells, waterways, rivers, and lakes are drowning in manure. CAFO’s commonly lock 25,000 to 40,000 pigs in warehouses. The sows live their entire lives inside barred cages. Millions of gallons of liquid manure is injected into dirt and sprayed onto land as a means of getting rid of the fecal waste.

Presently, there are 240 CAFO’s in Wisconsin. Bayfield County is currently in a lawsuit against the CAFO planned near Ashland, at the headwaters of Lake Superior and its watershed. The decision to allow CAFO’s in Douglas County has now been given to the Department of Agriculture Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP). You can contact them and ask them to protect us, the taxpayers and consumers against CAFO’s in our pristine wilderness.

The contact numbers are 608-224-5012 or 1-800-422-7128. Or, on the Internet, you can go to DATCP Home Page.

BOOK OF THE MONTH: Submitted by: Barb Resheske

“The Sioux Chef’s Indigenous Kitchen” by Sean Sherman

Researched and written by a Lakota Native American, who grew up on the Pine Ridge Reservation in the Dakotas. As a youngster, he realized that Government handouts of canned foods were not what Natives had in their Ancestry. Living with his Grandparents, he began cooking, at an early age, for them. This piqued his interest and eventually compelled him to travel the world searching for the roots of Indian foods. He discovered greens from dandelions, lambsear, gluten free grains that included wild rice, amaranth, corn flour, tubers, and sumac. There were jams made from berries, apples, and squash. The wild meat included venison, bison, and fish. All were natural foods that were staples of a healthy and nutritional life. The recipes are easy to prepare and are wholesome and artistically photographed.

A beautifully orchestrated look into the lives of the original people, their demise, and their rise back to self-reliance and need for their cultural place in America. One of the top chefs in American, Sean Sherman, has a restaurant in Minneapolis. Road trip anyone???

THANK YOU!

We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Nebagamon Community Association Members, Upper Great Lakes Foods, Manions, Midland Marketplace of Lake Nebagamon, Dollar General Store located in Poplar on Highway 2 and P, and to all of the Volunteers who helped to make our First Annual Spaghetti Feed Fundraiser a success! You are all awesome and we appreciate you greatly.

A special thank you to Patti, Pat, and Preston from Dockside (Lake Nebagamon) for their kitchen skills. You are awesome chefs! They offered both a Vegetarian Sauce and Meat Sauce for people with special diets, which was appreciated.

These fundraisers are to raise money to have 4th of July Fireworks in Lake Nebagamon. So, thank you to the community members for attending and donating so generously.

LION’S CLUB INTERNATIONAL

Lion’s Club International began in 1916 to help meet the needs of communities, both local and global. A non-political service organization established in over 200 countries worldwide, their aim is to raise money for worthy causes and for charitable purposes.

Lion’s Club have a Constitution, By-Laws, a Code of Ethics, and a Pledge to give unselfish service to others. Sadly, our own local Lion’s Club, located in Lake Nebagamon, have disbanded after giving many years of loyal service to our community. Declining memberships and the retirement of many hard working and diligent members are the reasons for their demise.

The grateful citizens of Lake Nebagamon wish to extend their heartfelt thanks for the generous time and energy our Lion’s Club has given to us. From Northwestern High School scholarships, to our 4th of July Fireworks, to our Garden Club, and numerous other organizations. Thank you for the 50 plus years of leadership.

You will be sorely missed!
