TAKE A HIKE!
No, not in the derogatory sense, ha ha. Take a walk through the Village of Nebagamon. There are a few “elderly” people that would like to have some company as they stroll through our beautiful Village. Everyone is welcome, i.e., parents with baby strollers, people in wheelchairs, etc. It is a great time to get together, get some fresh air, and socialize. If you are interested, I am compiling the list and I can get the walks organized. Give me, Debbie, a call at 218-830¬2317 or e-mail me at debInnews@outlook.com.

NATURE NEWS
MONARCH BUTTERFLY MIGRATION
Like Duluth’s Monarch’s buddies who are planting indigenous milkweed plants along the Lakewalk to assist the butterflies on their annual migration, Lake Nebagamon has its own Monarch heroes. Because most milkweed has been cut, poisoned, and otherwise destroyed by human development, the only habitat they eat and lay their eggs on, i.e., Milkweed, has caused the pollinators to disappear by 80% to 90%.

Lucky for rural areas, Milkweed still survives, but it’s our job to insure that it survives. Heidi Henrich Waller, of Lake Nebagamon, has been saving Monarch eggs and feeding them Milkweed. She and her son, Hudson, collect the eggs from mowed areas. Screen covered aquariums and glass jars filled with fresh (daily) Milkweed, Hudson careful harvests and keeps the eggs safe for 5 to 7 days. They then hatch into chrysalis that hang on the leaf for 7 to 10 days. They then morph into butterflies, dry their wings for a few hours, and then the beautiful Monarch butterflies are released into their garden onto asters, one of the Monarch’s favorite foods. A sincere thank you to the Waller family for your heroic efforts to save the Monarch
butterflies!

“WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR?”
The life of Mr. Rogers, the gentle, elegant, and kind television star of the 1960’s and 1970’s, is profiled in this PG13 film. It is now showing at the Zeitgeist Theater in Duluth. Going to the Zeitgeist Theater was an experience in itself. With an artistic venue, impressive cafe, and comfortable theater, the building is both modern and retro. The movie follows Rogers’ life as an overweight and bullied child, his ascent into ministry, and as a television star who saw the need for change in what children watched on television.
Cartoons and kid’s shows were violent, humiliating, and mean-spirited. But, that was the norm, and Rogers knew that they were harmful and frightening to children. His approach to a more gentle and kind world, he believed that all children were inherently good. He also believed that love is the answer and is a message that we all need to hear.
I give this man, and his movie, an A+!

YOU CAN RECEIVE A GRANT FOR THAT?
With all of the rain recently, we experienced erosion, flooding, dock and boat loss, soggy lawns, compromise of our wells and septics, etc.
Receive a Grant! Approximately 30 homes on Lake Nebagamon’s shoreline have utilized grants through the “Healthy Lakes Program” and you can too. The Grant allows up to $1,000.00 per property for the installation of rain gardens and other shoreline initiatives to divert rain water and prevent damage. Homeowners can lower the cost of the rain gardens by assisting in the installation.

Working with Paul Hlina, of Leaning Pines Native Plants, you can also establish butterfly and bee habitats as part of the project. Lake Nebagamon Ambassadors Will Keifer, Phil Takkunnen, and Alan Yashimoto, can help guide property owners through the process.

If you have access to a computer and Internet, visit the website healthylakeswi.com. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain by improving the health of your property and the
wonderful Lake Nebagamon.

“IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN TO US”
Something so tragic as a vehicle accident, house fire, etc., we tend to think that none of those tragedies will happen to us and our family and friends. But, unfortunately, they do and drownings of small children are included in that list. For a child under 30 pounds, it takes 30 seconds for them to drown in just a few inches of water.

Unfortunately, drowning is the number one cause of unintentional death for children between the ages of 1 and 4. It only takes a few seconds for a child to walk out an open door, get to unprotected pools, or get to any body of water. If you have a pool, make sure you have a secure fence around the perimeters. If you live near water, ensure that the child is with an adult at all times and that they are wearing life jackets.

This is a gentle reminder for such an important subject. It can happen so quickly and the results can be devastating. Let’s all have fun during the summer and enjoy the water and be safe.

SUNSCREEN
Did you know that Sunscreen lasts only one year? The lotion in the sunscreen is okay, but the effectiveness of the Sunscreen itself has deteriorated and isn’t any good at protecting us from the harmful rays of the sun.

Also, you should apply Sunscreen every two hours when you are outside. Or, if you are active and perspiring or swimming, you should reapply each time you come out of the water or after you are done with the sports and/or activity.

How much Sunscreen should I apply? For an average adult, you need to apply a minimum of 4 “shot” glasses of Sunscreen on your body. You can never have too much Sunscreen.

THANK YOU!
Thank you to the Bennett Fire Department for the donation of paper to the Nebagamon Community Association Newsletter. It is greatly appreciated.

HATS OFF TO THE VILLAGE OF LAKE NEBAGAMON
The Village of Nebagamon organized a great 4th of July week. It was the perfect place for family fun. The Dragontail run was enjoyed by young and old and it was a safe and well-organized race. There was also a non-denominational church service which was attended by many.

There was a wonderful concert by the Superior Singers and many other fun bands. Nebagamon has an amazing swimming beach, the 4th of July parade, Community Picnic, boat parade, and fireworks.

It took many volunteers and a great office staff at the Village to organize this week long event.

Everyone was very helpful and friendly. Thank you and a job well done!

CANS FOR KIDS
Thank you, thank you! Thank you to everyone that have supported Cans for Kids in the Village of Lake Nebagamon. Your monthly contribution of aluminum cans will bring in many dollars for the kids at the end of the year.

The following are businesses that have supported the Can for Kids during the past 15 years. The Midland Store has helped by allowing the can trailer to be located on their property all year. Botten’s Green Acres (Brad and Jody Botten) have supported the can business for many years. The Kro Bar (Dean Bailie) has supplied cans for many years. Bridges Tavern (Tracy Longa) has allowed the cans to be supplied weekly for the can trailer. The Dockside (Patti Coughlin) has also had cans for the program.

There have been a number of businesses that have helped the can trailer to be functional for the last few years. Ernie’s Welding (Frank Hietala); Brule Standard Station (Wes Ravela); Copp’s Auto Repair (John Copp) and the Nebagamon Fire Department (Jim Dawson).

Your Can Team Leader, Roger Drolsum (715-817-5456) would like to thank everyone that has supported the Cans for Kids over the many years.

P.S. I have one request…please bend each can once. This will save space in the trailer.
